What to pack for your TEFL Internship

Making the decision to teach abroad is a big one, and that’s why teaching internships are the perfect way to give TEFL a try, build up your experience and meet tons of new friends in the process. If you’ve decided to dip your toe in the TEFL pool and go for an internship, here’s our handy guide for packing smart – feel free to save it and check things off as you go!

N.B. Remember, this list will differ depending on the climate of the country you’re travelling to, so we’ve included all options. 

Smart teaching clothes and shoes – there may be a dress code for your school so make sure you check this before you go

Casual clothes for evenings and weekends

Swimwear

Sunglasses

Trainers / walking shoes / flip-flops

Underwear – including thermals if you’re travelling to a cold climate

Sleepwear

Sports kit – in case you’re asked to take part in sports events at your school

Toiletries and a towel

Phrase book and / or travel guide

Prescribed medication (if applicable) and a personal first aid kit

Small backpack for weekend travelling

Adaptor plug/s

Chargers for any devices

Mosquito repellent

Sun cream (high factor)

Ear plugs – to block out any noise at night (including snorers!)

Tablet or laptop – so that you can plan lessons from home (or you can use school computers)

Teaching materials – stickers, stuff about you/your home town to help introduce yourself to your classes

TEFL certificate – in case you want to stay on in the country and carry on teaching
