Will I Find a Teaching Job if I Finish My TEFL in June?

[object Object]

You’ve almost done it. The course is almost over, the certificate is within reach, and you’re already daydreaming about your classroom overseas. But then the calendar catches your eye. Mid-June. The school year starts September 1st. Two and a half months of limbo. Questions start creeping in: Is it too late? Should I have started earlier? Am I going to miss the boat entirely?

Let’s put that anxiety to rest right now. Finishing your TEFL in June is not too late. In fact, it puts you in a prime position—but only if you use that window wisely.

The Recruiting Calendar is Not One-Size-Fits-All

First, a reality check. Different countries operate on different hiring cycles. While it’s true that many international schools and public programs (like South Korea’s EPIK or Japan’s JET) prefer applications months in advance, plenty of opportunities remain open for late summer hires.

For example, language academies in China, Vietnam, and Thailand hire year-round. If you finish in June, you’re a perfect candidate for an August or early September start date. You’re not late; you’re exactly on time for the second wave of hiring.

The Hidden Advantage of a June Finish

Most TEFL graduates finish in the fall or early spring. You’re finishing in June, which means you’ll be job hunting while hundreds of other applicants are already placed or have given up. Schools that need teachers for the new semester are actively looking for fresh graduates just like you.

Your Canadian passport is a legitimate asset. Many schools prioritize native English speakers from countries like Canada, the UK, the US, Australia, and New Zealand. Combine that with your undergrad degree, and you already meet the visa requirements for most major teaching destinations.

What to Do Between June and September

This is where you make or break your timeline. You have about 10 weeks between finishing your TEFL and the school year starting. Here’s how to use them:

Get your documents ready now. Request your degree transcript, get your police background check (it takes weeks in many countries), and prepare digital copies of everything. Don’t wait until August.

Start applying in July. Many schools begin interviewing for September starts in late June and July. You’ll be early, not late.

Consider a mid-August start. Some schools have orientation weeks in mid-August. If you complete your TEFL by mid-June, you have eight weeks to secure a position and move. That’s plenty of time.

Which Countries Are Still Hiring?

If you’re worried about a Sept 1 start, focus on these:

  • China: Most language centers and international schools hire for late August or early September. You’ll find active job boards through June and July.

  • Vietnam: The academic year aligns closely with Western calendars. Public schools hire through July for an August start.

  • Thailand: The semester begins in May and again in November. But many private and bilingual schools hire for August intake.

  • South Korea: While the public school application deadline has passed for September, private academies (hagwons) hire year-round. You can easily find a position for September if you apply in July.

  • Mexico and Latin America: Many programs start in August or September. The hiring window opens later, so June is perfect timing.

The Truth About “Cutting It Close”

You’re not cutting it close. You’re cutting it smart. The sweet spot for TEFL hiring is between finishing your certification and the start of major school calendars. If you finish in June, you have time to prepare, apply strategically, and even take a short breather before moving abroad.

The only way June becomes too late is if you wait until August to start your job search. Don’t do that. Treat the next 10 weeks as your full-time job search window. Update your resume, write a compelling cover letter, and reach out to recruiters now.

One Last Thing

Your degree and your passport are already two huge advantages. Your TEFL certificate is your third. Finishing in June doesn’t change any of that. It just means you’ll step into a less crowded applicant pool with documents already in hand.

Stop worrying about the timeline. Start preparing for the packing.
